BEAUTY & BRAWN

I recently got my American drivers license, something one cannot do without in this country. It feels great to be on the road again. I missed driving. But driving in the first world is so different. No cows to dodge or traffic light vendors to shoo away. I miss those idiosyncrasies of driving in India; but I have to say, I am beginning to enjoy this strange civilized way of navigating the roads.

Before I gave my driving test my husband and I did a short road trip to Cape Cod for practice. At the south of Cape Cod is a quaint town called Sandwich. Yes, it is named after the Sandwich in England (like most towns in New England, MA) where THE Sandwich was invented. We visited the Heritage Museum & Gardens, which happened to have an exhibition on Concept Cars from the 50’s onwards. More inspiration to get a license may be?

I knew my husband would enjoy this but I was somewhat surprised to be so enthused by the exhibit myself. I am sure concept cars of today would be as inspiriting but the concept cars from that era just blew me away. There were multiple Chevy Corvettes, Cadillac’s, Fords, a Ferrari and even the General Motors Firebird! To me it was literally stuff that one would see in Orbit City in 2062 from The Jetsons show. The design ideas of what they presumed would be the future of automotive technology was simply extraordinary. The bright colours, more often than not shades of reds and greens, with the curvy edges and plump bodies creating a vibrant sheen, weirdly enough kept reminding me of tomatoes. How does everything remind me of food? But they did and I have images to prove it.

So from Concept cars to tomatoes would be just a regular conversation with Mo. But all these images of tomatoes got me thinking about how great this fruit is. We all know how tomatoes are excellent antioxidants. They also have double the amount of vitamin C and A than most other vegetables. But here’s a fun fact that most of us do not know. Before the 1500’s tomatoes only existed in Mexico! The Spanish brought it back to Europe and later took it to the Caribbean and then the Philippines from where it gradually reached Asia.

Tomatoes are used in so many varied ways through out the globe, and like concept cars, are just beautiful to look at and often used as a garnish to brighten up a dish. So there, the two do have something in common. Beauty and brawn; A potent combination in a frail world…
